Statement from COBA President Elias Husamudeen Regarding the First Personal Injury Lawsuit Filed By NYC Correction Officers Against One of NYC’s Most Violent Inmates
A child rapist allegedly attacked a female clinician at Rikers Island on Wednesday — one year after he attempted to rape a female corrections officer, sources said. Raleek Young — who was convicted in 2007 of raping a 13-year-old girl — was choking the mental-health worker when two correction’s officers intervened, law-enforcement sources said. He then attacked the officers until he was subdued. The staff member suffered minor injuries and was released, the Department of Correction said. Young has been charged with assault and is awaiting arraignment, sources said. “Commissioner [Joseph] Ponte has zero tolerance for assaults on staff. This inmate has been arrested,” a DOC spokesperson said. Last February, Young allegedly dragged a guard into a bathroom and attempted to rape her. She was rescued by other inmates.
