FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement from COBA President Elias Husamudeen Regarding the First Personal Injury Lawsuit Filed By NYC Correction Officers Against One of NYC’s Most Violent Inmates

NEW YORK (July 26, 2016)- “For too long, the City’s criminal justice system has coddled the most violent inmates who repeatedly assault correction officers without any fear of the consequences. In fact, the City has settled tens of millions of dollars in inmate lawsuits in recent years, emboldening these inmates to sue the City whenever they are involved in a Use of Force incident with a CO. Since the Department of Correction has failed miserably to quell the rising tide of inmate assaults on correction officers, particularly among the most frequent repeat offenders, we are letting inmates know that there will be legal consequences if you assault correction officers. If the DOC won’t take action, we will. This is just the beginning.”

Elias Husamudeen
